Keeping Your Companions Healthy with Pet Wellness Care

Pets benefit greatly from a trip to their veterinarian on a routine basis. Since they age much more quickly than we do, yearly exams (and sometimes twice-yearly exams) are essential for maintaining their health and well-being. At New Berlin Animal Hospital, we tailor our pet wellness care to meet your furry (or feathered, or scaly) family member’s unique physical and mental needs.

Compassion in Every Service

Our staff all use a low-stress handling approach with every service we perform. You’ll see this during every wellness exam, and you can be sure that we extend that high level of care when we need to take your pet to our treatment area.

Wellness Exams

For pet wellness care, we may employ several different services to give your pet a full health assessment. These include:

  • A nose-to-tail wellness exam including the eyes, ears, mouth, skin, heart and lungs, muscles, and joints
  • Fecal exam to check for intestinal parasites
  • Urinalysis (if needed) to assess bladder and kidney health
  • Blood work to screen for disease
  • Vaccinations (if due for boosters)
  • Parasite control options
  • Nutrition and diet (learn more about cat nutrition here)
  • Addressing any behavioral problems
  • Post-purchase exams (primarily for birds, but available for any animal)

Common Conditions We See: Pet Allergies

One of the more common conditions we see in cats and dogs is allergies. In our area, dogs and cats can develop environmental allergens from pollens, molds, dust, and more, as well as food allergies. Pet allergy symptoms often show up as skin conditions. A sign of allergies may include:

  • Red, dry, irritated skin
  • Excessive scratching
  • Licking and chewing their paws
  • Hair loss

When you bring your pet in for a skin condition, we'll perform the necessary diagnostics to determine the cause. Once we decide it is allergies, we can form a treatment plan that may include:

  • Apoquel (an anti-itch tablet for dogs)
  • Cytopoint (an anti-itch injection for dogs that lasts 4-8 weeks)
  • Atopica (an anti-itch oral medication for cats)
  • Antibiotics (for secondary bacterial infections)
  • Anti-fungals (for secondary fungal infections)
  • Medicated shampoos and topicals (to help manage allergy symptoms)

Exotic Pet Wellness Care for Your Unique Companions

For special companions, you need special care. We focus on learning more about your exotic pet's home life and habitat because their environment, diet, handling, and socialization all have a huge impact on their health. If any of these elements is not meeting their needs, your pet can have serious medical complications. At an exotic pet wellness exam, we’ll talk to you about these four pillars of care and more to ensure their health and well-being.

Pet Microchipping

Pets are escape artists, and when they go missing, it can be stressful wondering if they’ll ever make it back home. With a pet microchip, your worry can subside! At New Berlin Animal Hospital, we use the HomeAgain microchip. HomeAgain provides pet owners with a variety of resources including a pet recovery network, lost pet alerts, travel assistance, and more!

If you’re planning to travel internationally with your pet, you’ll need to be aware of your destination country’s requirements. Most likely, your destination will require an ISO (International Standards Organization) approved chip. The main difference between ISO chips and typical US chips is the number of digits: US chips usually only have 9, while ISO chips have 10. Luckily, HomeAgain chips are all ISO compatible, with 10 digits, so when you choose to microchip your pet, you’re taking a proactive step toward international travel!
